Fireworks Spectacular Saturday 6 November at Alexandra Park 2004. A family day out with music, stalls and a fabulous Fireworks display to end the evening. Howick in the Park February. Garage Sale September. Senior Citizens Christmas Party December. Howick Christmas Parade December An Introduction to the Lions Club of Howick Following a series of meetings in late 1961, organised by the Lions Club of Pakuranga the formal Charter was presented in March 1962 by New Zealand?s first District Governor and the ?Father ? of Lions the late Horace Kirk. The Charter President was Earl (Later Sir Earl ) Richardson. One member of the Charter year is still an active member of the Club, our Charter Secretary Brian Harris. The first ten years were busy for the fledgling Club and activities included; Assistance with the Miss Auckland Contest, provision of uniforms for the Howick Brass Band, Painting interior of the Plunket rooms, Beach clean projects, Tree planting in the Howick Domain and Eastern Beach. 1965 Chartering of the Lions Club of Waiheke 1966 Hosting the District Convention 1968 In it?s first ten years of activity the Club completed a major project, the planning and building of the Westminster Flats in Pakuranga Rd. This was a $140.000.00 project, a very substantial and significant sum in the nineteen sixties. The concept of making available a modestly priced home unit to elderly persons was an initiative taken at a time when there was a very real yet un-met need for such accommodation. Again for the times this project was one of the largest undertaken by a single Lions Club. A total of eighteen flats were built and to this day are a valuable community facility 1970 Formation of the Howick Leo Club ( for young adults ) The next few years saw no lessening of activity starting with the building of the pathway and the provision of seating at Mellons Bay. Notable was Lions involvement with the formation of the first Neighbourhood Support groups about the same time as the successful Lions national project, the ?Speak Up? Campaign. 1975 A major project was the house removal to Andrews Road, the proceeds from which enabled the Club to proceed. In recent years activities have continued apace including involvement in Youth Exchange activities to Japan and Australia, development of the Hawthorden Reserve from a wilderness to a pleasant grassed area,. Traditionally Lions have been supportive of the Blind and Visually handicapped, collecting for Braille Week and also helping with the provision of Guide Dogs A popular function for many years past has been the annual Christmas party for senior citizens as has been the clubs participation in the annual Howick Christmas Parade. Service activities have their lighter side as evidenced by the ?Lions Power? ?Dads Army?, Trinidad Steel Band, Marching Girls, Marching Hats and not to mention the ?Girls from St. Trinians? in December 1996. The ?Tatler? is delivered to every member each month the week before the Dinner meeting and serves the useful purpose of keeping us (and our partners) informed of our current, past and future activities. Members also receive ten issues per year of the New Zealand Lion magazine.
